Debbie’s work is a reflection of her love for the natural world around her. She has always been enamored by the way light, pattern, texture, and color can be manipulated in a work of art to evoke an emotional response. She strives to capture the subject at its most natural moment in time, in order to create a sense of wonder, serenity, awe, excitement, or nostalgia. She believes that in this “fast paced” world the admirers of her art will, for the moment, take time to slow down, look, relax, and reflect.
Born in Charlottesville, VA, Debbie resided in Fairfax County, VA until her family moved to Fayetteville, NC in 1993. Earning a BS degree in Art Education from Longwood University in Farmville, VA, she also has experience in Illustration and Graphic Design. After a teaching career spanning over 20 years from elementary through high school art in both the public and private setting, she is now following her passion in the field as a professional artist.
Debbie’s early career as a freelance artist was multi-dimensional, where she produced logo designs and illustrations, as well as two- and three-dimensional art for businesses and schools. Currently, as a multimedia artist, she works from her business, Cross Creek Studio, in a restored millhouse called Mill House Art, which serves as the perfect setting for her genre. She creates striking watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, graphite or colored pencil drawings depending on the nature of the work. Debbie also creates stoneware and raku sculptural and functional pottery. Finally, in keeping with a tradition of quality art education that she is so passionately known for, Debbie continues to teach students at her studio.
During her career, her award winning works have been exhibited both regionally and locally, as well as having been displayed in many juried competitions. Debbie is the subject of art-related publications and her works are in the collections of businesses, a university, and private individuals. In her spare time, she is a Master Gardener volunteer.
